Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
In the Women Artists unit, we have art works to create inspired by Faith Ringgold. Her gorgeous sunflower work radiates colour. We were inspired to create a mixed media sunflower artwork with threading practice for little fingers. We look at the close-up flower works of Georgia O’Keefe. Create a stunning collaged flower using tissue paper and added drawing details! Yayoi Kusama is a contemporary artist who is known for her bright and joyful works. We create a torn paper collage of faces with drawing details in this fun art project.
Students will draw on the elements of colour, shape, form and texture in the creation of these works. We will use tissue paper collage, drawing, mixed media and torn paper to create these works. information is included in the lesson plans.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Find out about famous Women Artists, including contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and her love of polka dots! We use painting, printmaking, and collage techniques to create vibrant flowers inspired by her sculptures. We look at contrast and analogous colours in the process of creating.
Georgia O’Keeffe not only drew flowers she was also captivated by the numerous animal skulls she found in the desert where she lived. Use lead pencil and soft pastels to create a skull drawing inspired by her works. Use the artist information sheet to find out more about this inspirational artist. This lesson plan is also suitable for grades 5 and 6 and contains curriculum details for grades 3 to 6.
Grade 5 and Grade 6
In the 5-6 grade category, students will complete two artworks inspired by contemporary artist Jane Donaldson and USA artist Corita Kent. The work inspired by pop artist Corita Kent focuses on each individual student creating an artwork expressing ideas and facts about themselves.
Jane Donaldson is an Australian Contemporary artist and the artwork inspired by her uses mixed media. Learn to use paper serviettes, create painted and patterned papers and collage to create your own individual artwork on A3 paper. Learn about layering and contrast and how to use several different media cohesively on the one artwork in both of these projects.
