USA Artists
Explore US artists with these colourful art lessons. Your students can discover pop art, modernism, neo-expressionism, abstract and folk art all in this American dream of a unit. We will use a range of materials and techniques including collage, watercolour painting, mono-printing, mixed media and painting.
Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
Within the K-2 USA artists lesson plans category, we will be looking at African American artist Alma Thomas and creating a collage circle using vibrant coloured papers. We will look at works by modernist painter, Georgia O’Keeffe and create a stunning sunrise with watercolour. Laurel Burch was a designer who created brightly coloured artworks of cats. We’ll draw and paint a colourful cat face using oil pastel, paint pens and edicol dye.
Students will draw on the elements of colour and shape, form and contrast in the creation of these works, they will use these skills in order to create the illusion of depth in their sunrise artwork.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Within the grade 3-4 USA artists lesson plans category, students will find out about famous African American street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. We will use mixed media to create vibrant artwork with his signature symbol of a dragon. Andy Warhol is a famous pop artist, his works focused on Campbell’s soup cans, shoes and cats. We will use a fun mono-printing technique to create multiple shoe prints in the style of Andy Warhol.
We will use the elements of colour, form, shape and line. These lessons will expand on your student’s knowledge of art history, allowing them to experiment with colours and textures to create their own artworks.
Grade 5 and Grade 6
Within the 5-6 grade category, students will complete two detailed artworks inspired by George Rodrigue and Keith Haring. Both these artists loved to have fun with their art so we are sure your students will too! Bright colours and fun themes are the order of the day with a painting of the iconic Blue Dog and creating a composition with tumbling figures in Keith Haring style.
In each artwork, students will have the opportunity to experiment with colour choices, colour mixing, blending and composition. Students will improve their sketching, drawing and painting abilities, and better grasp the skills and techniques required when creating an artwork.
