UK Artists
Explore UK artists with these colourful art lesson plans. Your students can discover the art of designers Orla Kiely and William Morris, create works inspired by Eric Carle, David Hockney and Simon Wiltshire in this quintessentially UK art unit. We will use a range of materials and techniques including collage, printmaking, watercolour painting, drawing, mixed media and painting.
Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
In the UK Artists unit, we have art works to create inspired by David Hockney, Orla Kiely and Eric Carle. We will create an underwater swimmer inspired by David Hockney’s famous series of pool paintings. Orla Kiely was a famous Irish designer and homewares creator. We will re-create her 60’s vibe with a gorgeous flower print. Famous children’s author Eric Carle’s story of the ‘The Mixed Up Chameleon’ would be a great literature tie-in for the colourful chameleon art project.
Students will draw on the elements of colour and shape, form and contrast in the creation of these works. We will use bleeding tissue paper, oil pastel resist and printmaking techniques to make these artworks. Artist information is included in the lesson plans.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Find out about famous Op Art artist Bridget Riley and use coloured pencils to draw an op art parachute work. Use tone and contrast to make the work look 3D with easy techniques, the kids will love creating this work.
William Morris is a famous designer of china ware. Draw and paint this quintessentially English teacup artwork. Use the William Morris design sheets and create your own tea set to colour with watercolour. We will use the elements of colour, form, shape and line. These lessons will expand on your student’s knowledge of art history, allowing them to experiment with colours and textures to create their own art.
Grade 5 and Grade 6
In the 5-6 grade category, students will complete three artworks inspired by contemporary artists Stephen Wiltshire and Illustrator James Ward. We will also look at beautiful tulip watercolour drawings of Mary Moser, who was one of the most celebrated female artists of 18th century Britain.
Stephen Wiltshire is an autistic savant who has the amazing ability to view a city from the air and then accurately draw it, in detail, from memory! Use images of Buckingham Palace to try his pen line drawing style with your class.
James Ward is a contemporary UK illustrator known as JimBob. His art is fun and quirky and his anthropomorphic animals inspired our deer portrait. Use any of the different animal reference images to paint an animal portrait in acrylics.
