Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
Kinder to year 2 kids can learn about South East Asia with art projects from Borneo, Singapore and a Batik style used in textile design from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and Indonesia. We have a fun safe way for kids to try out batik with no hot burning wax. Then its off to Borneo for a cute baby orangutan drawing in chalk pastel. Singapore noodles is a fun textile and mixed media project using felt and wool for kids to make and learn about food from the region.
Students will learn about line, shape, colour, form, movement, texture and contrast in the creation of these works. We will use drawing, collage and work with fibres such as felt and wool to create these artworks.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
The beautiful lotus flower grows in waterways throughout Vietnam. The flowers range in colour from white to hot pink. They flower through the day then close up and retreat into the water at night. Your students can create this stunning painting on A3 paper and learn how to create outlines and repeat shapes to create a unique composition.
Radiomode, also known as Budi Kwan is a contemporary illustrator and artist. He lives in Indonesia and Singapore and creates fun, quirky designs that are available as T-shirts or printed on canvas. We view his work to inspire us to create some colourful quirky animals of our own animals such as a dinosaur on roller skates! Let your kids use their imagintion and come up with their own colourful and quirky animal designs.
Students will learn about line, shape, colour and contrast. We will use acrylic paint on paper and oil pastel on black paper to create these artworks.
Grade 5 and Grade 6
Shadow puppets in South East Asia originate from Bali and Java in Indonesia. Students can create an articulated dragon inspired by this ancient tradition. Use the step by step instructions and detailed photographs for your students to create their own designs. Expand on this lesson and have your class create videos, puppet plays or stories based on their creations.
Vietnamese lanterns are on display in the ancient town of Hoi An. They are brightly coloured and displayed outside shops and buildings for special occasions such as weddings. They are made from silk stretched over a wooden frame and are lit up at night to create a wonderful spectacle for visitors and locals alike.
These lesson plans cover line, shape, texture, form, layering, composition, contrast, and colour with elements to be drawn and painted using acrylic paints, a handmade print block, oil pastels and paint pens and paint sticks.
