In the K-2 category, students will create a sweet Christmas Elf artwork complete with large pointy ears and a floppy green cap. Use acrylic paint and paints sticks to add colour to the artwork in this easy to create festive elf with fun googly eyes.
Make a stunning gold star printed on black paper. Begin by creating an individual design and print plate using basic materials. Set up printing stations and print the plate using gold paint on black paper, rotate the image to make a six sided star. Kids will learn about contrast, repetition and radial symmetry.
Young artists will learn some basic clay techniques to create an air dry clay Christmas Tree. This lesson can be adapted to kiln fired clay with painted decorations if you have access to a kiln. Learn how to roll clay to get an even thickness and then add some sparkle for Christmas joy. You can even add glitter if you dare!
Students will learn to use a variety of processes including collage, working with mixed media, printmaking techniques and basic clay skills. We’ll find out about texture, contrast, colour and design.
In the year 3-4 category, students will have the opportunity to draw Chibi, a Japanese style of anime, with a Christmas Theme. Use alcohol ink markers on marker paper to create some enchanting Christmas characters. Choose from an angel, snowman, Santa, elf or reindeer.
Christmas elves are well known as Santa’s little helpers. We caught one just leaving home and heading to the toy workshop! Create this enticing elf door with mixed media for a fun Christmas activity. Kids can create their own elf with personality and decorate the front of their house with their own designs. This is a 2D relief sculpture with a wooden door and modelled elf to make.
The art lessons will allow children to try a non-traditional form of Christmas drawing with fun, anime chibis. They will learn illustration techniques using alcohol ink markers with their vibrant colours. We’ll look at proportions used in cartoon style drawing and to consider colour schemes for the art. The elf Door artwork has different textures, colours and patterns. There is lots of opportunity to design their own, unique artwork incorporating colour, texture, shape and form. Kids will experiment with a range of materials in these Christmas art lessons.
Year 5-6 students will be able to make the facade of a gingerbread house in clay. We use two colours of air dry clay to make the house, white and terracotta. Those with a kiln could adapt this lesson to use with kiln fired clay. Kids can design their own gingerbread house and add Christmas inspired details such as holly and candy canes. They will learn some basic clay techniques such as how to roll a slab, create clay components and score the surfaces to join them to the base.
It’s the night before Christmas and Santa is heading off to deliver the presents. He’s waving goodbye to Mrs Claus as he heads off for the busiest night of the year! Create a wintery scene with fir trees, Santa and his sack, all using painted paper collage. We’ll use acrylic paint to paint the papers and then add texture in a variety of ways.
These art lessons will help students learn to create painted papers with implied texture as well as develop their sketching skills. Templates are provided and can be used if required or kids can create their own design. Students can practice their compositional skills to come up with their own ayout. They’ll need to consider the background, midground, and foreground of the artwork as well as the overall effect of the artwork’s composition. These lessons focus on the elements of colour, form, shape, and texture, and will allow students to explore with a range of mediums including clay, acrylic paint, paint pens, and glitter glue.
