Dive in deep to the vibrant and diverse world beneath the waves! In this series of lessons, we will explore the beauty and mystery of aquatic life experiment with painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture, to capture the movement, colours, and textures of the aquatic world.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2
Dive into the vibrant and diverse world of life on the water! In this series of art lessons, K-2 students will have fun creating sailing boats bobbing on the sea. Use painting and drawing techniques to create the background and the boats and then collage them beteen the waves for a colourful boat scene. Explore colour with a fun turtle artwork to make. Use bleeding tissue paper and experiment with colour blending to create a colourful, patterned shell.
Create a water bird with clay. These long-legged water birds are easy to make, and kids will learn some basic clay skills while making these fun characters. This project uses air dry clay and acrylic paint to make your birds colourful!
Grade 3 and 4
Take your grade 3-4 students on an artistic adventure to explore the vibrant, colourful world of coral reefs. Using a variety of art materials and techniques, they will create their own mandala and underwater scene, bringing to life the diverse marine life and intricate coral and anemones that make these ecosystems so fascinating.
Students will learn to use layering, blending, and contrast to depict the dynamic colours and movement found in a reef environment. Students will develop their skills in observational drawing, using pencil and watercolour to create an underwater mandala. They can paint with acrylics to make their own underwater fish scene and gain an appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the ocean’s most colourful habitats. Let’s dive in and bring the reef to life through art!
Grade 5 and 6
Be inspired by Australian Artist Juz Kitson and create a stunning clay reef sculpture. Create intricate forms in clay resembling corals and anemones and then use watercolour washes to add colour to these air dry clay sculptures.
Look at the intricate and awe-inspiring art of Ernst Haeckel, a 19th-century biologist and artist known for his detailed illustrations of marine life. Haeckel’s work beautifully combines science and art, capturing the delicate forms and patterns of creatures like sea anemones, and microscopic organisms with stunning precision. Students will use coloured pencils and gel pens to create a stunning work on black paper inspired by Haeckel’s work.
