All About Me
All About Me art lessons! In this unit the art lessons are based on our students, their hands, their interests, their faces. Create personalised artworks sure to engage your class!
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2
All About Me art lessons in the K-2 category will have students create a brightly coloured artwork by tracing their own hands. The hand tracings will overlap creating interesting shapes which they can then colour using oil pastels and a tempera paint wash. This lesson plan draws on elements of repetition, pattern and uses harmony and balance during the construction process. We will create a gorgeous name based artwork, inspired by famous artist Paul Klee.
Children will use their name as a basis for the letters and use colour to fill in the negative space around the letters. These lessons will draw on the elements of line, repetition, colour and pattern, and will expand student’s understanding of different compositions and their use in creating harmony, balance, and conveying meaning to the viewer. In the clay artwork students will use their intial to create and paint a small plaque with air dry clay. This lesson plan instructs on simple clay techniques including scoring and joining clay components to create the plaque.
Grade 3 and 4
All About Me art lessons in the grade 3-4 year category will have students drawng a vibrant self portrait in the style of Picasso. We will use PVA glue to outline the portrait and then fill in the colour with chalk pastels to create a wonderful work of art. Students will learn about line and blending chalk pastels to create this fun portrait.
We will look at works by famous artist Jasper Johns and create an artwork based on students’ initials. We will use line to crate overlapping letters and then colour them with pencil to create a limited colour artwork. Students will enhance their knowledge of line and how it can create overlapping shapes in an unusual way to form an abstract composition. In the silhouette drawing, students will strike a pose and create a drawing outline of their image. We then use coloured markers and repetitive horizontal lines with a limited colour palette of either warm or cool colours to create this fun silhouette artwork.
Grade 5 and 6
All About Me art lessons in the grade 5-6 category will have students experimenting with continuous line portrait drawing. Students sit opposite each other, looking at their classmate while drawing and not focusing on their paper! This results in not only hilarity and fun but free flowing line and drawings. These portraits can then have colour added with oils pastels and watercolour or tempera block paints to highlight certain features of the face. Students will enhance their sketching skills and learn to draw in a freer, more unrestrained way.
The Surrealist portrait focuses on an area of interest for each student. The silhouette allows them to focus on the surrealist aspects and add objects to create a theme in their silhouette surrealist portrait. Students will learn drawing, colour mixing skills and how to add fine details with paint pens to their work. Students will also practice colouring and textural effects, composition, and colour mixing skills with acrylic paint.
